What is the Root Chakra?

Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra, or Muladhara in Sanskrit (meaning root support), is the first of the seven main chakras. It serves as the energetic foundation of your entire chakra system—governing your most primal needs for safety, stability, survival, and your connection to the Earth.

When this chakra is strong and balanced, you feel grounded, calm, and supported. But when it’s blocked or imbalanced, you may experience anxiety, fear, restlessness, or a lack of belonging.

Muladhara at a Glance

  • Location: Base of the spine (perineum)

  • Element: Earth

  • Colour: Deep red

  • Mantra: LAM

  • Symbol: Four-petaled lotus

  • Sense: Smell

  • Crystal Allies: Red jasper, garnet, smoky quartz, black tourmaline

  • Body Connection: Feet, legs, bones, large intestine, adrenal glands

Spiritual Significance

The Root Chakra reminds us that being grounded is deeply spiritual. It connects us to the ancient rhythm of the Earth, the memory of our ancestors, and the wisdom of our body. Through this energy centre, we learn to trust the present moment, to honour our physical existence, and to create a life we feel safe to inhabit.

Muladhara is where our soul meets soil—a space of stillness, strength, and sacred belonging.

Signs of Balance vs Imbalance

Balanced Root Chakra:

  • You feel safe, grounded, and present

  • Trust in life’s natural flow

  • Stable routines and self-discipline

  • Strong physical awareness and body connection

  • A clear sense of place and belonging

Imbalanced Root Chakra:

  • Anxiety, insecurity, or fear

  • Disconnection from body or surroundings

  • Financial worries or instability

  • Clinginess or controlling behaviours

  • Lower back, leg, or digestive issues

Holistic Healing for the Root Chakra

Balance your Root Chakra through grounding rituals, nourishment, and mindful movement:

  • Grounding Rituals: Walk barefoot on the Earth, sit beneath a tree, spend time gardening, or lie flat on the ground to reconnect.

  • Movement: Gentle yoga focusing on the lower body—Mountain Pose, Warrior I & II, Squat Pose—helps root energy downward.

  • Nourishment: Eat grounding foods like root vegetables (beetroot, carrots), stews, grains, and proteins to support your body.

  • Herbal Support: Deep, earthy herbs such as dandelion root, nettle, burdock, and ashwagandha support the nervous system and spirit.

  • Spiritual Tools: Use salt cleansing, red candles, patchouli, cedar, or vetiver incense, and protective charms to energetically support this chakra.

Root Chakra Affirmations

  • I am grounded, safe, and secure.

  • I trust in the stability of life.

  • My body is my sacred home.

  • I belong here, and I am enough.

Your Healing Begins at the Root

Just like a tree cannot flourish without strong roots, you cannot rise without grounding. The Root Chakra invites you to anchor deeply into your truth, your body, and the Earth. When you feel secure and supported, your energy can flow freely—and your soul can rise fully into its potential.

Begin at the root, and everything else will follow.
